Snowboarding Breaks for the Environmentally Minded Traveler
Thousands of avid snowboarders will soon be searching for their ski pants and scooting away seeking the heaviest snowfall. And without doubt the affect from your carbon footprint will be almost as far down the list of vacation to dos as a turkey sandwich after the Christmas vacation. But last Christmas, a slow snow was in the newspaper headlines and tourists were panic stricken about the flecks of snow melting almost as soon as they settled.
Skiing holiday organisation Chalet 1802, located at the bottom of Mont Blanc in Chamonix France in the Alps, is one of the first independent businesses to go carbon negative and offer skiers an environmentally friendly selection while booking their ski vacations. Chalet 1802 founder DABIR said: Last season was quite a surprise with the warmest wintertime in 50 yrs in Europe. Skiing resorts for example Portes du Soleil, Chatel and Les Houches has difficulty.It was temperate and the snow did not last so a lot of the early winter snowboarding season in the French Alps was patchy. We decided to go carbon negative to help preserve the skiing resort.
DABIR said: We’re not trying to dictate to guests but I consider its all important to provide the guests the selection without increasing the price of the skiing holiday. When the customer book with us and holidays in our skiing chalet they can more than off set their carbon footprint and we soak up the other costs. Naturally we still have a sauna and a hot tub – clients wish for luxuriousness but not at the expense of the alps mountains, so we viewed methods of decreasing the affect of someone traveling over here for a winter holiday.”
Chalet 1802 have also partnered with organisation Climate Care, who attacks climate change by providing carbon dioxide deductions on behalf of individuals and businesses.
