Safer, Cheaper Truckstops and Drivers Accommodation Required

The Truckstop campaign by union Unite that demanded safer and cheaper truckstops across the UK has been revived recently in wake of the increasing freight crimes as well as a survey conducted by lobby group Truckersworld.

The campaign reflects upon the state of truckstop services, which are often inadequate, leaving the trucks and their cargoes susceptible to theft and other damages. The survey shows this clearly when it reports a marked increase of 63% in freight crimes, most of which happen when the drivers haul their truck for a night’s sleep.

According to the Assistant General Secretary of Unite, Len McCluskey, truck driving is tough work and the difficulties are added upon by inadequate facilities for the safety and security of the cargoes. He also pointed out that the survey reports only confirm what the drivers have already experienced a number of times with respect to the crimes against them as well as their cargoes.

McCluskey believes the only way to solve this problem is to provide for cheaper and more secure overnight truckstops. He urged the government as well as the industry to make a collective move in providing the truck drivers proper accommodations with adequate facilities and to prevent further losses to the overall economy that amount to nearly £250 million per year.
